Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Hyundai i20

A new-look Hyundai i20 has debuted at the Geneva Motor Show, and the facelifted model is set to become the cleanest combustion-engined car on sale.

When powered by the 74bhp 1.1-litre three-cylinder diesel, the new i20 emits just 84g/km of CO2, and is said to be able to return 90mpg.

An 89bhp 1.4-litre diesel is also available which, when fitted with Blue Drive technologies such as a stop-start system, will emit just 96g/km.

The new i20 gets Hyundai’s latest design cues, which means there's a hexagonal grille, detailed headlights and a new sculpted bonnet. The new car is also 55mm longer than the current model. For more details click here.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Koenigsegg Agera R

Low emission and all-electric cars weren’t the only vehicles making a splash at Geneva. Koenigsegg took the wraps of its storming 2013 Agera R hypercar at the show.

The flagship R model is claimed to have a top speed of 273mph and is fitted with the world’s first hollow one-piece carbonfibre wheels. They reduce weight by up to 20kg.

Aerodynamic tweaks also improve downforce and cut drag, while the R features revised exhausts to improve the performance of its rear diffuser. Low friction cylinder liners in the engine also help to boost power to as much as 1,124bhp in the flagship model.

The Swedish supercar maker also launched its online car configurator at the show. It allows buyers to specify their dream model and print off a brochure specific to their car.

As if that wasn’t enough, the firm also unveiled Koenigsegg Lifestyle. The online store features a range of memorabilia and merchandise designed for owners and fans. The range of 40 products includes everything from clothing and books to models and jewellery. For more details click here.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: Morgan Plus E Concept

The new Morgan Aero Coupe and Plus 8 were on show beside a new all-electric model, dubbed the Morgan Plus E. And in a unique twist, the retro-styled machine features a five speed manual gearbox, unlike existing electric cars.

“We’re Morgan. We make exciting sports cars, so it has to be fun,” explained a company spokeswoman.

The Plus E is currently a working prototype and shows the famous firm is determined not to be left behind by its rivals. Power is from the latest version of Zytek’s 94bhp electric powertrain, which should be enough to power the Plus E from 0-60mph in little over six seconds and provide a range of up to 120miles. Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Ferrari California

Ferrari has revealed an updated California that's not only shed 30kg of weight but has also gained an extra 30bhp.

Thanks to new exhaust manifolds and re-tuned engine mapping, the 4.3-litre V8 now produces 483bhp and 505Nm of torque.

The weight loss is down to new aluminium construction technologies that have also ensured structural rigidity remains identical to that of the old California.

Acceleration from 0-62mph has been cut from 3.9 to 3.8 seconds and, although there have been no tweaks to the handling on standard models, Ferrari will now offer a Handling Speciale package.

This includes variable dampers, stiffer springs and steering which is 10 per cent quicker than the standard California's. For more details click here.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Toyota Yaris Hybrid

The Toyota Yaris Hybrid has made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Toyota says it is the most affordable hybrid in the UK.

Toyota brought hybrid power to the masses with the original Prius, is now offering the same technology in its Yaris supermini.

The 99bhp petrol engine is mated to an electric motor, both of which direct power to the front wheels. Together they're capable of 80.7mpg, while producing just 79g/km of CO2, making the new Yaris Hybrid the most CO2 efficient combustion engine on sale in the UK.

This means the car qualifies for free road tax and is exempt from the London Congestion Charge.

The new Yaris Hybrid comes with air conditioning and automatic transmission as standard, and is available to order now. Prices start at just under £15,000 with first deliveries scheduled for July. For more details click here.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2012 Range Rover Westminster

Land Rover is celebrating 10 years of the current-generation Range Rover with three new special editions, which have been shown at the Geneva motor show. They are likely to be a final hurrah for the current car, as an all-new Range Rover will be launched this summer.

The Range Rover Westminster edition (pictured) replaces the 4.4 TDV8 Vogue and Vogue SE models. The model will go on sale in March, priced from £69,995. It gets a special ‘Noble’ finish to the front grille and side vents, plus new 20in alloys and special Westminster badging.

Inside, it gets special carpets and Grand Black trim, plus an upgraded stereo system and heated and cooled seats. Seven exterior colour choices are offered alongside five interior trim themes.

The 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography and 5.0 V8 Supercharged Autobiography specials get the Range Rover Design Pack as standard, which includes new front and rear bumpers, a ‘Titan’ theme to the front grille and special 20in alloys finished in Shadow Chrome.

Inside, these two models get the Range Rover Seat Style pack as standard. This means the rear seats are heated and cooled, and can recline and feature lumbar adjustment. The front passenger seat can also be pushed forward using the ‘front seat away’ function to aid rear legroom.

The TDV8 version of this special edition costs from £84,295, with the Supercharged model coming in at £86,895.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 BMW M135i

BMW is set to crown its second-generation 1-series line-up with this exciting new 300bhp plus six-cylinder powered BMW M135i model, which has been unveiled at the Geneva motor show.

The Audi RS3 rivaling hatchback, planned for UK sale before the end of 2012, forms part of BMW’s new M Performance line-up, joining the recently revealed M550d xDrive saloon and touring, X5 M50d and X6 M50d.

It is also the first three-door version of BMW’s second-generation 1-series that is set to be sold with the same range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines as its more practical five-door sibling from mid-year.

Although not a fully-fledged M-car, the M135i draws heavily on the year-old M135i Coupe, sharing its engine and gearbox among other go-fast components.

Full details are yet to be revealed, but BMW insiders hint the new hatchback’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine, the M54S as it is known internally, kicks out in the region of 320bhp, together with 332lb ft of torque.

Unlike the rear-wheel-drive only M135i Coupe, though, Autocar can reveal that BMW plans to offer the new M135i hatchback with both standard rear-wheel drive and optional four-wheel drive. But like other non SUV xDrive models sold by BMW, the upcoming M135i xDrive is likely to come in left-hand drive form only, ruling out UK sales of the four-wheel drive version.

With a rumoured 1500kg kerb weight and power-to-weight ratio described as being better than 220bhp/tonne in rear-wheel drive guise, Munich’s new hyper hatch is expected to deliver performance comparable to the M135i Coupe – 0-62mph acceleration in 4.9sec, 0-124mph in 17.3sec and a limited 155mph top speed.

Allied to the upgraded driveline is a heavily reworked suspension with wider tracks, lower ride height and larger 18-inch wheels than standard 1-series models. BMW describes the handling as offering “a noticeable improvement in overall agility and more precise characteristics”. The brakes have also been upgraded, with 360mm rotors appearing up front and 350mm units at the rear.

As previewed by the concept at Geneva, the M135i will receive a distinctive body kit to differentiate it from other less powerful three door 1-series hatchback models. Included is a deeper front bumper boasting typical M division styling cues, LED imbued headlamps, unique mirror housings, wider sills under the doors and a substantial rear bumper featuring a black lower section and twin tail pipes.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Volkswagen Golf GTi Cabriolet

Volkswagen has launched a GTI version of the new Volkswagen Golf cabriolet at the Geneva motor show. It will be available to order in the UK in July ahead of first deliveries in September.

The 207bhp/207lb ft drop-top (VW’s most powerful and first GTI Golf convertible to date), will crack the sprint to 62mph from standing in 7.3sec before reaching a top speed of 147mph (146mph with DSG).

VW claims fuel consumption of 37.2mpg with emissions of 177g/km of Co2. By contrast, the tin-top version of the same car achieves 38.7mpg and 170g/km of Co2.

The hydraulically operated cloth roof takes 9.5 seconds to open and can be operated up to speeds of 18mph.

Features of VW’s hot cabriolet car ape those of the standard GTI’s. These include the model’s red-rimmed radiator grille, GTI bumpers, rear diffuser and 17-inch ‘Monza’ alloys, which are wrapped in 225/45 rubber. Tartan sports seats and a leather-trimmed steering wheel also make the list.

With the roof down, the Golf GTI cabriolet’s boot can swallow a class-leading 250 litres; a Mini convertible musters exactly half this figure. Prices are yet to be revealed, but it is expected to cost just over £27,000.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: Volkswagen Cross Coupe Concept

A super-frugal version of the Volkswagen Cross Coupe has been shown at the Geneva motor show. The SUV concept previews the next Volkswagen Tiguan first shown at last year's Tokyo motor show and updated for Geneva.

The advanced four-wheel drive showcases a new plug-in diesel-electric hybrid system Volkswagen is developing for use in a range of upcoming production models that is claimed to provide the updated, 1858kg Cross Coupe with 157mpg economy and 46g/km of CO2 emissions, and a range of up to 800 miles. The VW Cross Coupe develops 380bhp in total and has a top speed of 137mph.

The new hybrid system, which replaces the similarly conceived petrol-electric arrangement of the initial Cross Coupe concept, mates a 187bhp version of Volkswagen’s new 2.0-litre four-cylinder common rail EA288 diesel engine, complete with twin balancer shafts for added running refinement, with a pair of electric motors – one sited up front delivering 54bhp and, in combination with the diesel engine, providing drive to the front wheels and the other mounted at the rear with 114bhp and driving the rear wheels. The electric motors are driven by a 9.8kW/h lithium ion battery pack.

In pure electric mode, at which its top speed is limited to 80mph, Volkswagen’s latest concept is also said to be capable of achieving distances of up to 28 miles. The driver can choose between hybrid and electric drive modes via a switch on the centre console. In electric mode a clutch is opened to disengage the diesel engine, reducing mechanical drag. If, however, additional battery charge is required to power the electric motors, the diesel engine springs to life to top up the battery.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: Pininfarina Cambiano Concept

The Pininfarina Cambiano sports saloon concept is the Italian styling house’s star at the Geneva motor show. The Italian styling house closed its coachbuilding business last year to concentrate solely on car design.

The Cambiano adopts a Hyundai Veloster-style door arrangement, with one door on the driver’s side and two doors on the passenger side. The rear door on the passenger side is rear hinged, and there is no B-pillar on this side to boost access to the four-seat cabin.

The range-extended electric car features a 79bhp electric motor mounted in each wheel. It can crack 0-62mph in 4.2sec and reach a top speed of 170mph. Its all-electric range is 125 miles, but this is increased when the front-mounted diesel generator kicks in.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Lamborghini Aventador J

This is the Lamborghini Aventador J, a one-off, road-legal roadster that company boss Stephan Winkelmann says is a testament to his firm’s commitment to pushing the limits of design, despite increasingly rigid road car regulations.

As such, it takes its name from the world motorsport governing body’s ‘Appendix J’ regulations, which define racing car class specifications. The J also invokes Lamborghini’s history, referencing the one-off 1970 Lamborghini Jota, which was a high-performance version of the legendary Miura.

The roofless roadster took centre stage on the firm’s Geneva motor show stand and has already been sold off at an undisclosed price as “the most extreme expression of Lamborghini DNA in existence”. It is priced at €2.1million, or about £1.75m.

Lamborghini has pledged that no other prototypes or museum pieces will be made in the same vein — although insiders have confirmed that a more widely available but less extreme Aventador roadster will be launched later this year.

Modifications are restricted to the J’s extreme styling; it’s powered by the same 690bhp 6.5-litre V12 as that of the fixed-head car. It also has the same four-wheel drive system and uses a modified version of the same pushrod suspension.

The J is based on the Aventador’s carbonfibre monocoque, although it has been extensively modified to accommodate the roofless structure, as well as being stripped out in the interests of saving weight. The bodywork has also been substantially reworked to boost aerodynamic grip.

The loss of the roof, windscreen, air-con, stereo system and sat-nav mean the Aventador J is significantly lighter than the coupé; Lamborghini says the interior has been stripped out, as any gadgets would detract from the “raison d’etre of this car: to provide an extreme driving experience”. It also features upward-opening doors that are substantially thinner and lighter than the coupe’s. Lamborghini has not released its weight, however.

At 4900mm in length, 2030mm wide and 1110mm high, it is 120mm longer and 26mm lower than the Aventador coupé; the width is the same, but Lamborghini says this is the lowest car it has ever built. Despite the absence of a windscreen, the height difference isn’t as great as you might expect due to the protruding rear-view mirror, which sits on a periscope-like arm, and the two rollover bars that sit behind the seats.

The front end is also narrower than that of the fixed-head Aventador and features a dramatic air scoop with central fixing braces and upward-tilting winglets on the outer edges. Lamborghini claims these, plus the substantial rear spoiler, have been designed to give the Aventador J the look of a Formula 1 racing car.

At a preview to the new car at the Volkswagen Group night ahead of the Geneva motor show, Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann said, "at Lamborgini we make dreams come true and we want to continue doing this in the future".

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: Bentley EXP 9 F Concept

The Bentley EXP 9 F concept, unveiled at the Geneva motor show, shows how a 180mph, £150,000 Bentley SUV would look in production.

The concept, powered by a re-engineered version of the current 6.0-litre petrol W12 engine, is as long and slightly lower than a Range Rover, but much more powerful. A W12 petrol version will be the production flagship, but Bentley will also offer buyers the choice of a V8 diesel engine or a V6-based plug-in hybrid powertrain.

“We are aiming for the very top of the pinnacle with this model,” says Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer. “We want it to be the most prestigious, fastest and the most expensive SUV money can buy. We will position it well above the Range Rover, Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and Audi Q7, the most expensive European SUVs at present. There are no precedents for this car, but we are absolutely convinced it will work.”

Dürheimer sees great potential for the Bentley EXP 9 F in emerging markets like China and Russia, but points out that Bentley’s biggest market continues to be the USA, home of the full-size SUV.

The EXP 9 F, which will have a proper name Bentley insiders “already know and are investigating”, will probably become the marque’s best-selling model, with initial production around 3500 units rising to 5000 as markets develop. Last year, the Bentley Mulsanne and Continental, sold a total of 7000 units. Any foreseeable production rise can be handled comfortably without any major expansion of Crewe’s relatively modern plant, says Dürheimer. Current production is achieved on a single shift; on two shifts it could hit 15,000 units annually, far more cars than Bentley has ever produced.

The EXP 9 F project is very much the brainchild of Dürheimer, who pushed the Porsche Cayenne SUV through against entrenched opposition from colleagues, dealers and 911 enthusiasts while he was product chief in Zuffenhausen a decade ago. It has since become easily Porsche’s best-selling model.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta

Ferrari took deposits on around 360 new F12 Berlinettas ahead of the car's official unveiling at the Geneva motor show, CEO Amedeo Felisa has told Autocar.

Prior to its unveiling the new car was shown during a week-long event of customer previews. Around 450 customers have seen the car so far, with 80 per cent placing orders immediately according to Felisa.

"The interest is strong, and the conversion rate in such a short space of time very encouraging," said Felisa. "The next job is to convince the remaining 20 per cent and show the car to more potential customers."

The F12 Berlinetta is the fastest and most powerful road car in the Prancing Horse’s illustrious history. The 730bhp 6.3-litre V12-powered Ferrari 599 replacement ushers in a new generation of V12 engines that will include an all-new Enzo by the end of the year.

The F12 Berlinetta can crack 0-62mph in just 3.1sec and 0-124mph in just 8.5sec. Its total torque output is 509lb ft, 80 per cent of which is available from 2500rpm. The normally aspirated V12 revs all the way 8700rpm.

It was originally thought to be called the Ferrari 620GT, but the official name references classic Ferraris including the 250 GT Berlinetta.

Ferrari also claims the new car has lapped its Fiorano test track in 1m 23s, which makes it the fastest Ferrari road car ever to have lapped the circuit. Its maximum speed is claimed to be “over 211mph”.

The engine, which has a specific output of 116bhp/litre in the F12, is based on the same 6262cc 65 degree V12 found in the Ferrari FF. But the F12 produces 80bhp and 5lb ft more than the FF, and its power and torque outputs also eclipse those of the 612bhp, 448lb ft 6.0-litre V12 found in the 599.

While the power has increased dramatically in the F12 over the 599, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have decreased at a similar rate. Fuel economy is claimed to have been improved over the 599’s 15.8mpg combined figure to 18.8mpg, and CO2 emissions have dropped from 415g/km to 350g/km. Both these figures are with the optional stop-start system fitted.

Ferrari has extensively repackaged the rear-drive F12 over the 599 to cope with the extra performance. At 4618mm long, 1942mm wide and 1273mm high, the F12 is 47mm shorter, 20mm narrower and 63mm lower than the 599. The wheelbase is also 30mm shorter than the 599’s 2720mm.

Most of the changes have occurred at the rear, where the transaxle F1-style dual-clutch gearbox and rear suspension are repackaged to reduce the volume at the rear. The engine, seats and dashboard are also lower, with the centre of gravity lower and further back than in the 599. The F12’s weight distribution is now an “ideal’ 46/54 front/rear, compared to 47/53 in the 599.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concept

Land Rover showed off this Range Rover Evoque convertible concept at the Geneva motor show. Land Rover says the Evoque convertible concept ‘explores the potential for the world's first premium convertible SUV' and a decision on production could be made within the next two months. John Edwards, global brand director told Autocar: "We want a share of the growing SUV market."

The convertible has been built to gauge public reaction to such a vehicle. Land Rover used a similar tactic to assess the response to the DC100 concepts that could form the basis of the next Defender. If reaction is positive, however, a drop-top Evoque would fit neatly into Land Rover's plan to expand the reach of the Evoque model range, fuelled in part by the success of the smaller car and the continuing growth being enjoyed by the brand.

The Range Rover Evoque convertible could be two or four wheel drive and either petrol or diesel powered. Land Rover engineers say about 75kgs of strengthening would be needed compared to the big-selling hard-top version.

If the green light is pressed on production, almost two years worth of engineering and proving would be required before the Evoque convertible would be ready for production, which could take place at the Halewood plant.

Land Rover is keen to carefully consider demand for a drop-top Evoque because the company already has a full order book for the current version – with 50,000 built and orders for another 60,000 – and wouldn’t want to divert focus away from it towards a potentially niche model.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2012 Maserati GranTurismo Sport

Maserati is replacing its best-selling Maserati GranTurismo S model with a new Sport variant. The GranTurismo Sport, revealed here at the Geneva motor show, gets a revised, 454bhp 4.7-litre V8 engine, which gives the model a 186mpg top speed and a 0-62mph time of 4.7sec.

Two transmissions choices will be offered on the Sport. The standard gearbox is a six-speed torque converter automatic, while a six-speed sequential manual transaxle ’box comes as an option. The latter has steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, a feature that’s optional with the auto ’box.

To distinguish the Sport from the outgoing S, the model receives a restyled front bumper that’s claimed to optimise airflow for both engine and brake cooling. There are also new front headlights and LED daytime running lights fitted as standard, while the rear lights have been replaced and some dark trim has been added. Inside, the steering wheel is new; revised front seats liberate an extra 20mm of headroom.

Pricing has yet to be revealed, but the Sport is likely to cost around £90,000 when the car reaches the UK in September. The standard 4.2-litre V8 GranTurismo and the hardcore MC Stradale variants continue unchanged.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Volvo V40

Volvo has unveiled a new-look Volvo V40 five-door hatchback at the Geneva motor show designed to revive its fortunes in the premium hatchback class, and steal volume from the dominant BMW 1-series and Audi A3. The outgoing S40 and V50 models die to make way for new V40 production tipped to reach 90,000 units a year at Volvo’s Ghent plant in Belgium.

The car, which combines the virtues of the outgoing S40 and V50 models in one body style, hits the European market late in May, and the UK in August. It comes with six engine options (three petrol and three diesel) spearheaded by a 254 bhp version of Volvo’s own turbo five-cylinder, tipped to deliver a 150 mph top speed and 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds. Ultimately Volvo will adopt a four cylinders-only strategy and provide high performance versions “by electrification”.

The petrol range has two additional four-pot turbo 1.6s from Ford and rated at 150 bhp and 180 bhp. The diesel range includes 177 bhp and 150 bhp 2.0 litre turbo fives, plus a super-frugal 1.6 litre 115 bhp turbo four emitting just 94 grams/litre CO2. All cars have stop-start systems, brake energy regeneration and Volvo’s improved City Safety anti-collision system that now works at up to 50 km/h (30 mph).

However, the biggest safety development is an all-new pedestrian airbag, that pops the car’s bonnet on impact and provides a large cushion at the base of the screen onto which a pedestrian can fall, yet which is U-shaped to allow the driver visibility to keep steering.

Designed while Ford still owned Volvo, the new V40 has been embraced Geely-appointed CEO Stefan Jacoby. The car will spearhead an aggressive new “Designed Around You” marketing campaign to “revive Volvo’s rightful place in the world”. The new V40 uses Ford Focus platform, though Volvo insists that it has re-rated the electric power steering and revised every spring and damper setting. The car is about four centimetres shorter than the outgoing model, but lower and wider. Kerb weight is still being calculated, engineers say, but it “should be lower”.

It also gets a plush, simple interior meant to embody Scandinavian values. It has mood lighting and even a gently illuminated gear lever knob. The digital dash is interactive.

UK prices are expected to start from just over £19k for a 1.6-litre D2 in entry-level ES specification, which will include the enhanced City Safety system, Pedestrian airbag and Bluetooth system.

Mindful of an urgent need to sell more cars than the current company-wide 450,000, these prices reinforce Volvo’s view that big rises will be avoided.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Audi RS4

The Audi RS4 is making a comeback after a four-year hiatus — and like the original introduced in 2000, it will be sold in estate form only. The third incarnation of Audi’s hot load hauler has made its first public appearance at the Geneva motor show.

Right-hand-drive cars should arrive in the UK this autumn. Exact UK pricing has yet to be finalised, but insiders hint that the RS4 Avant will come in at around £55,000, pitching it into direct competition with the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG estate, which costs from £56,765.

Audi has given three reasons for offering the RS4 in Avant form only. It says its hot estates have always traditionally outsold their saloon equivalents, the market is moving away from hot four-doors, and the S5 Sportback has sufficient power for those wanting a performance Audi four-door in the segment.

At the heart of the new RS4 Avant is the same naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 found in the RS5. The four-valve-per-cylinder unit kicks out 444bhp at 8250rpm. This is up by 30bhp on the previous RS4, but torque remains as before at 317lb ft between 4000 and 6000rpm.

By comparison, the C63 AMG estate’s naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 delivers 451bhp in standard trim, rising to 480bhp in combination with an optional performance package, together with 442lb ft of torque.

Audi has not revealed a weight for the RS4 Avant prior to Geneva, although it’s almost certain to be beyond the 1725kg of the RS5. It does, however, claim 0-62mph acceleration of 4.7sec, which is 0.2sec faster than the old second-generation model and just 0.1sec slower than the rapid RS5. Top speed is limited to 155mph in standard trim, but a performance option can raise that figure to 174mph.

Drive is channelled, as in the RS5, through a specially calibrated version of Audi’s seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It has a manual mode that can be controlled via steering wheel-mounted paddles or the gear selector lever. Launch control is standard.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2012 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse

Bugatti has unveiled the most powerful roadster of all time, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, at the Geneva motor show.

The new model is based on the existing open-topped Grand Sport model, but with the significant hikes in power and torque seen on the closed-topped Super Sport version.

Whereas the current Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport possesses 987bhp and 922lb ft, Bugatti’s engineers have teased 1184bhp at 6400rpm and 1105lb ft at 3000-5000rpm from the new Vitesse edition – mirroring the increases made to the Super Sport compared to the ‘regular’ Veyron coupé.

The increased power of the new roadster’s 16-cylinder, eight-litre engine is made possible by the four enlarged turbochargers and intercoolers. The chassis has also been modified to support the power increase.

The French manufacturer hasn’t specified a 0-62mph time for the revised machine, but expect it be in the region of 2.5sec. By comparison, the current Grand Sport achieves the sprint in 2.7sec and goes on to a top speed of 253mph, but is limited to 223mph with the transparent polycarbonate roof removed.

A price tag has yet to be confirmed, but should be in the region of the £2.1m asking price for the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: Volkswagen Winter Up! Concept

The Winter Up is based on the four-door Cross Up concept that was on show at the Frankfurt motor show last year. It is designed for winter sports, and features a snowboard carrier on the roof rails. The car also has ESP with differential locks to deal with snowy road conditions.

The Volkswagen is painted in two colours: ‘pure white’ and ‘malibu blue’. The body surfaces are painted in cool ‘pure white’, while ‘malibu blue’ is used as a contrasting colour on the bumpers, the door mirror housings and the seam that runs parallel to the side windows.

This variant has underbody protection at the front and rear, and rugged exterior accents on the wheel wells and side sills.Link Up to four snowboards or six skis can be stowed on the roof rail-mounted holder.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: Volkswagen Swiss Up! Concept

The Volkswagen Up has appeared in four new concept guises at the Geneva motor show – the Swiss Up, Winter Up, X Up and Cargo Up.

Swiss Up, designed to pay tribute to Geneva and Switzerland, has an exterior and interior that’s painted in the red and white colours of the Swiss flag.

The cabin is finished in the ‘ceramique’ trim colour. The leather is also styled in ‘ceramique’ in the outer area of the seats, the rear head restraints and the middle of the rear bench seat; the seat surfaces (and grab handles in the roofliner) are upholstered with brown Alcantara.

Running laterally across the centre panels of the front seat backrests is a narrow leather band. Worked into each leather band is a holder for a pocket knife. White, silk-like ‘porcelain paint’ adorns the dashboard, while the decorative bezels of the round air vents are painted in ‘tornado red’.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Mercedes SL63 AMG

The Mercedes SL63 AMG has been revealed in public at today's Geneva motor show. In top 'Performance Package' specification, it offers 557bhp and a 0-62mph time at 4.2sec.

In line with its standard sibling, the new SL63 AMG eschews steel construction for the first time, adopting a state-of-the-art aluminium and magnesium structure that, in combination with a carbonfibre bootlid and vacuum die castings within the chassis, is claimed to bring a kerb weight of 1845kg, a significant 125kg reduction over its predecessor.

The new car is differentiated from lesser versions of Mercedes’ sixth-generation SL by an extensive body kit. It’s a purposeful-looking machine, with a much more aggressive look than earlier performance versions of the upmarket roadster.

The new SL63 AMG ditches its predecessor’s naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 engine for a more contemporary twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 that, in keeping with all recent new AMG models, will be sold in two states of tune.

In standard guise, it gets 530bhp at 5500rpm and 590lb ft at 2000-4500rpm. An optional AMG Performance Package increases power output to 557bhp at 5500rpm and torque goes up to 664lb ft between 2250 and 3750rpm.

In both models, the prodigious reserves are channelled through AMG’s seven-speed Speedshift automatic gearbox to the rear wheels. The car also has a launch control function, known as Race Start.

Mercedes puts the new SL63 AMG’s 0-62mph time at 4.3sec – or 4.2sec with the Performance Package added. In the standard car, top speed is limited to 155mph. This rises to 186mph with the Performance Package.

Underpinning the new SL63 AMG is a heavily upgraded version of the standard SL’s newly configured chassis, with four-link front suspension and multi-link rear, allied to uniquely tuned active air springs and dampers as part of an uprated version of Mercedes’ ABC (active body control) system.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: Volkswagen Polo Blue GT Concept

The Volkswagen Polo Blue GT, a performance-orientated version of the Polo has been unveiled at the Geneva motor show. The Blue GT will feature the VW Group’s 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a cylinder deactivation system.

With 138bhp, the Polo Blue GT is claimed hit 62mph in 7.9sec and reach a top speed of 131mph in standard six-speed manual guise – 1.0sec and 11mph slower than the Volkswagen Polo GTI, which runs a 178bhp version of the same engine.

Fitted with Volkswagen’s new ACT cylinder deactivation system, which closes down the middle two cylinders on part throttle loads, combined average consumption is put at 60.1mpg – or 62.7mpg in combination with an optional seven speed dual clutch gearbox.

UK sales have not been officially confirmed, but it is likely the Polo Blue GT will appear in showrooms by the end of the year.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Ford B-Max

The all-new, production-ready Ford B-Max MPV has been unveiled at the Geneva motor show. The new car promises to be one of the most innovative models ever seen in the segment. The Fiesta-based B-Max has been shown exactly one year after it was previewed as a concept car of the same name. It is the latest model to be developed under the global ‘One Ford’ strategy. UK sales will start in September.

Ford has been late to arrive in this booming segment (the current Fusion, which the B-Max loosely replaces, not being worthy of comparison), which is populated by models such as the Vauxhall Meriva, Citroën C3 Picasso and Renault Scenic. But Ford claims that the B-Max’s “ingenious design and unrivalled technology sets a new benchmark for smart, compact, city-friendly cars”.

Chief among the innovations is the absence of B-pillars and the addition of rear sliding doors. This is unprecedented in the segment and stays true to last year’s concept car. Indeed, although one of the B-Max’s larger siblings, the Grand C-Max, also offers rear sliding doors, it retains conventional B-pillars.

Ford has got around the technical problems usually associated with the absence of B-pillars, chiefly side impact safety and production complexity. The B-pillars themselves are integrated into the sliding doors.

“The B-Max combines an exciting, innovative design with features that only previously have been found in bigger cars,” said Ford of Europe CEO Stephen Odell. “It’s a brand-new car that responds to the needs of an increasing number of customers who want much more from their small cars.”

Exact technical details are scarce at this stage; Ford plans to reveal more in the build-up to its Geneva launch. The concept version was just over four metres long, which made it 11cm longer than a five-door Fiesta and 32cm shorter than the larger Focus-based C-Max. The production car’s dimensions are expected to mirror the concept’s.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: Bertone Nuccio Concept

Italian styling company Bertone has unveiled its latest concept car, the Bertone Nuccio, at the Geneva motor show. The striking concept – named in honour of Giuseppe ‘Nuccio’ Bertone, former owner of the Turinese design house, is described as an ‘extreme sportscar that puts an evolutionary imprint on the concept that is built into Bertone’s DNA: the mid-rear engined berlinetta’.

No details of the powertrain that would underpin the Nuccio have been revealed. The car has a low, muscular one-box design that is part of the company’s historic tradition.

The Nuccio will be under the spotlight at several events as Bertone celebrates its centenary. After the Geneva motor show the car will appar at the Beijing show in April and at the Turin National Car Museum in May.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: Ford Transit Tourneo Concept

The Ford Transit Tourneo concept 'people mover' has been unveiled at the Geneva motor show.

Ford says it showcases "a dramatic new look, and is previewing the introduction of an all-new family of one-tonne Ford Transit people movers and commercial vehicles for Europe and Asia."

Stephen Odell, Ford’s European chief, said: "The Tourneo Custom’s car-like qualities will be appreciated by a broad range of business and leisure customers." These include an "all-new interior design with driver-focused cockpit, and a luxurious, fully trimmed cabin which has the ambience and high-quality materials of a modern multi-seat saloon car."

The Concept also showcases a number of features new to Ford in this sector, including multi-adjustable and removable rear seating, a SYNC voice-activated, in-car connectivity system, a rear-view camera and lane departure and driver alert.

This concept is powered by a 153bhp version of Ford’s 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine.

The front-drive Tourneo Custom Concept is based on a new Ford global platform which the company says has been engineered to "deliver car-like dynamics, including agile, responsive handling, enhanced ride comfort and reduced noise-levels."

"We wanted to give the driver, and the rear seat passengers, an interior which has the same standards of design and quality they would experience in a modern multi-seat saloon car, but with ample space for people and luggage," said Paul Campbell, chief designer at Ford of Europe.

Ford says this Tourneo has a "stylish, sculpted instrument panel is orientated around the driver" which is less of a commercial design and more closely related to the interiors of Ford’s road cars.

The rear seats themselves are of "a completely new design, which can be easily folded into multiple configurations, or removed completely."

The new Transit panel van range - which is based on the same platform - will be revealed in April, and are expected to have a different nose design to the Tourneo.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Rolls-Royce Phantom

The Rolls-Royce Phantom has undergone its most extensive overhaul since launch in 2003. Revealed at today's Geneva motor show, the Phantom Series II is only distinguishable from before by a series of subtle styling tweaks. The biggest changes are the addition of a new eight-speed automatic gearbox, a new rear differential and overhauled electronic systems in the cabin.

The new eight-speed automatic replaces the existing six-speed transmission. It is mated to the otherwise unchanged 453bhp 6.7-litre V12 engine. Economy is improved by 10 per cent and CO2 emissions are cut from 388g/km to 347g/km.

Rolls-Royce design chief Ian Cameron describes the styling changes as “a familiar theme, lit in a different way”.

The Phantom Series II is the first production car to adopt fully LED headlamps as standard. The adaptive lights change in intensity according to speed and feature a cornering capability. Other styling changes on the Series II include restyled bumpers and rectangular light apertures.

The changes are adopted across all four models in the Phantom range: saloon, extended-wheelbase saloon, coupé and drophead. The first Series II models will be delivered by the end of June, at prices around five per cent higher than the current Phantom range.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Smart ForTwo

Smart has unveiled a series of subtle styling tweaks to its Smart Fotwo city car for 2012. The look was first previewed on the electric Smart Fortwo ED at last year’s Frankfurt motor show, and was seen on the rest of the range for the first time at the Geneva motor show.

Styling tweaks include a new front grille, which now features an integrated Smart logo. There is also new front and rear spoilers, ‘muscular’ side skirts, and revised optional horizontal LED daytime running lights. Three new alloy wheel designs and seven exterior colour choices are also offered.

Interior tweaks include fresh, higher quality leather and fabric trim options, and optional leather trim to surround the instrument panel. Five trim levels – Pure, Pulse, Passion, Brabus and Brabus Xcvlusive – are offered, but UK models will likely receive just three - Pulse, Passion and Brabus.

There have been no chassis tweaks, nor any changes to the Smart’s engine line-up. That means buyers can choose from a 1.0-litre three-pot petrol with 70bhp, 84bhp or 101bhp in the Brabus, or a 0.8-litre diesel with 54bhp.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: Infiniti Emerg-e Concept

Infiniti chiefs say it is “feasible” to build a production version of its Emerg-e extended-range electric sports car, unveiled at today's Geneva motor show. Infiniti has constructed a running prototype that produces 402bhp from its two electric motors.

The main challenges will be the cost of the motors and the need to outsource the car’s carbonfibre body. Infiniti’s product planning boss, Francois Bancon, said, “There is nothing really difficult to do except the carbonfibre, where we need a high-level partner.” He envisaged the Emerg-e would cost around “$150,000 (£95,000).

Jerry Hardcastle, vice-president of Nissan’s UK-based European technical centre, hints that there were some strained conversations with Francois Bancon, when the topic of this year’s Geneva concept was first brought up.

“We got some quite challenging performance targets from Francois,” recalls Hardcastle. “You can imagine the phone call: ‘Jerry, we want a range-extender electric vehicle that can do 0-60mph in four seconds and 130mph. At the same time it must have a pure-electric vehicle range of 30 miles, but with the range extender we want a range of 300 miles’.

“I did ask him, ‘Are you sure you don’t want a V6 turbo four-wheel-drive concept instead?’.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Aston Martin Vantage

Aston Martin has debuted a series of engineering updates and styling revamps for the 2012 Vantage range at the Geneva motor show.

The new line-up will be priced from £84,995 for the entry-level V8 and will top out with the limited-edition V12 Zagato at just under £400,000.

Described as the biggest range overhaul since 2008, the base 420bhp V8 Vantage gets a number of upgrades first seen on the Vantage S model, including quicker steering, bigger brakes and wider tyres. A new steering column installation, revalved power steering and a quicker (15:1 from 17:1) ratio is claimed to give more feedback and provide more agility.

The braking system has been enhanced at the front, with new 380mm, two-piece ventilated cast iron front discs and six-piston calipers. Aston is claiming “significantly increased stopping power and pedal feel”. A brake-holding Hill Start Assist set-up is also included as standard, and the tyres are now 10mm wider.

The new seven-speed Sportshift II automated manual transmission is now an option.

The 2012 V8 Vantage is distinguished by styling changes inspired by the Vantage S and limited-edition Vantage N420. It gets a new lower front bumper and air splitter, restyled sills and a new rear bumper equipped with a diffuser.

Priced from £99,995, the 430bhp Vantage S gets the new Sportshift II ’box as standard, as well as a sports exhaust, a “motorsport-derived, carbonfibre detailed” aerodynamic styling package and a more sumptuously trimmed, hand-stitched leather interior. The company’s new integrated Garmin sat-nav is also standard, as is cruise control and Bluetooth. The V12 Vantage continues unchanged.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Renault Zoe

The Renault Zoe electric supermini has been revealed in production trim at the Geneva motor show.

At £13,650 OTR (after the government’s £5k ‘plug-in’ grant) the Zoe will be the cheapest EV on the market. It’s also got the best-quoted range, with a maximum of 130 miles (or 60 miles in cold weather in the city – Renault’s idea of the typical ‘worst case scenario’) from each charge, plus Quick Drop battery tech so power packs can theoretically be swapped in three minutes.

Quick Drop infrastructure won’t be available in the UK when the Zoe arrives in the autumn, and Renault can’t tell us when – or if – it will.

Design-wise, the Zoe holds true to the concept shown in 2010 apart from the latest family headlamp/grille graphic added by new Renault design boss Laurens Van den Acker. The exterior is credited to Jean Semeris, whose ‘Petite Souris’ (the original sketch had a cute mouse-like demeanour before the new nose graphic was applied) was chosen from a range of internal designs. Semeris concentrated on “expressing harmonious movement”, rather than attempting to create something avant-garde in homage to EV technology, and the car is more svelte than the Modus whose dimensions it (approximately) shares.

A 2.58m wheelbase and 4.08m length mean there’s a ‘wheel at each corner’ stance, and deep body sides designed to hide the Zoe’s battery pack account for its 1.73m height. The battery is sandwiched under a 20cm high platform running aft from the front seats. Under the bonnet there’s a 65kw (89hp) motor, which drives the front wheels directly, top speed being limited to 84mph. Interestingly Renault has yet to reveal overall vehicle weight, but the car’s construction is conventional steel monocoque.

Inside there are three trim levels, an entry-level and a pair of themed luxury versions called ‘Techno’ and ‘Zen’. The latter includes an air toxicity sensor, ‘relaxing’ air ioniser and scent diffusers thanks to a tie-up with L’Oreal.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2012 Bentley Mulsanne Mulliner

A sporting interpretation of the Bentley Mulsanne has been unveiled at the Geneva motor show today. The Bentley Mulsanne Mulliner Driving Specification features sports-tuned suspension and steering as well as a raft of bespoke design features that set it apart from other variants of Crewe’s flagship.

The Mulliner Driving Specification is angled towards Bentley drivers who want a Mulsanne with a sportier look, feel and character.

The car’s Drive Dynamics Control system, which allows the air suspension and steering systems to be tuned to a preferred driving style, now has a ‘Sport’ setting. Operated by the rotary switch mounted next to the gearshift selector, ‘Sport’ provides enhanced grip, body control and steering accuracy without compromising ride comfort.

The new variant of the four-door saloon also gets new 21-inch, light aluminium alloys with race derived titanium fasteners, bright-finished rims and 265/40 ZR21 tyres. The accelerator and brake pedals of the Mulliner Driving Specification are made from drilled alloy.

The cabin gets a driver-focused look and feel, including diamond quilted leather seats and door casings and tactile ‘knurled’ finishes to the major controls.

Exterior design touches unique to the car include sweeping wing vents made from cast, polished stainless steel that emulate Bentley’s ‘Flying B’ emblem and a black matrix grille.

There are no performance tweaks to the 505bhp, 6.75-litre V8 under the bonnet of the Mulsanne, which means it keeps the standard car’s claimed 0-60mph sprint time of 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 184mph.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: Ssangyong XIV-2 Concept

SsangYong has showcased its new ‘convertible’ concept, named the SsangYong XIV-2, at the Geneva motor show.

The SsangYong XIV-2 – which stands for eXciting User Interface Vehicle 2 – is a successor to the similar concept that was on display at the Frankfurt show late last year.

XIV-2 is a crossover SUV-convertible and features a one-touch automatic opening soft-top, pram-style roof. It has been designed for a global audience and targeted at the younger generation.

The concept is 4166 long, 1820mm wide, 1566mm high and has a 2600mm wheelbase. Planned power options include frugal 1.6-litre diesel and petrol engines.

Chief technical officer Jae Wan Lee said: "It previews the new design language for our new entry level compact SUV. It's in a new segment and has bags of character. It's designed to appeal to new, younger customers."

The concept's hi-tech cabin gets big iPad-style screen in centre console. There is also extensive use of carbonfibre and aluminium trim.

Although SsangYong hasn’t revealed any details of the new car’s interior, XIV-1 featured an unconventional seating layout that could be configured as either 1+1+2 or 1+3. Dashboard functions on that car were controlled via mobile devices and smart instruments.

Ssangyong wants to boost sales to 300,000 units by 2016. It sold 113,000 in 2011 which was an increase of 40 per cent on 2010.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 BMW X6

The facelifted BMW X6 has been unveiled at the Geneva motor show today.

Changes at the front of the revised car include relocated foglights, which now sit high up in the outer air inlets, a more pronounced kidney grille and the addition of optional adaptive LED headlamps; these come as standard on the new BMW X6M as do blue aluminium brake callipers.

At the rear of the facelifted X6, new horizontally mounted twin LED light banks emphasize the car’s width. Further external revisions include new paint finishes – including Marrakech Brown metallic, Orion Silver metallic and Midnight Blue metallic – and new bi-colour, double spoke 19-inch alloys for the BMW X6 xDrive 50i model.

As well as featuring in the new BMW M Performance tri-turbo diesel line-up, the facelifted X6 is available with five engine choices – the range topping 555bhp X6M, V8 xDrive50i, six-pot xDrive35i and diesel-powered xDrive40d and xDrive30d, the latter of which is available with BMW’s nitrogen oxide-reducing BluePerformance Technology from spring. This also features in BMW's revised 1-series engine line-up.

Inside the revised X6’s cabin, standard leather interior is available in Vermilion Red for the first time, while the nappa leather option comes with the choice of either Black or Ebony White.

Sales of the revised BMW X6 start in June and prices start from £46,725 for the xDrive30d (a premium of £340 compared with the current model) and rise to £85,680 (up by £3.5k) for the range-topping X6 M. The new M Performance tri-turbo diesel X6 will cost from £62,260 when it goes on sale at the same time.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: Rinspeed Dock+Go Concept

Swiss firm Rinspeed is addressing the range anxiety issue associated with electric city cars with its innovative new Rinspeed Dock+Go concept at today's Geneva motor show.

The Smart Fortwo Electric Drive-based concept features a detachable trailer axle – which Rinspeed calls a ‘backpack on wheels’ – that can house a combustion engine or range extender, be packed with batteries or powered by a fuel cell. This ‘backpack’ powers the rear wheels of the Fortwo, thus increasing the otherwise limited range of the electric Fortwo.

If a driver is only going to undertake a short journey, then the ‘backpack’ can be removed and the car’s standard all-electric range remains. Rinspeed’s creator Frank M Rinderknecht calls this charging range-extending system a ‘vario-hybrid’.

When the pack with auxiliary batteries is docked and the vehicle is not in use, the pack can be used to provide electricity to the driver's home.

The trailer comes in various sizes and styles to meet a variety of different potential uses. Those outlined by Rinspeed include a heated box for pizza delivery drivers or a mobile toolbox for craftsman. It can also be adapted for storing golf clubs or equipment for camping trips. Any battery packs can be recharged using solar panels on the roof.

Although the concept is based around the Smart Fortwo ED, the Dock+Go system could conceivably be attached to other vehicles.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: Nissan Hi - Cross Concept

The Nissan Hi-Cross concept, which has made its debut at the Geneva motor show, explores the expansion of the marque's crossover line-up. The design could influence new variants of the Qashqai, X-Trail and Murano.

Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President Nissan said: "We don't do concepts for the sake of it, so it's fairly clear this is a car showing how a vehicle above Qashqai could look. That high front sweep, the front V, the lamp signature are all likely to make it to production in Europe.

"We are actively trying to be different in each sector of the market - that doesn't mean building niche vehicles, but cars that are innovative and exciting in the mainstream sectors they operate in."

The concept has a dramatic design, with smooth, cross-over styling. The road manners are understood to have a far a stronger on-road bias to the ride and handling. Both two and four-wheel drive transmissions are expected to be engineered.

The aim with production versions of the Hi-Cross is to score a sales success against conventional saloons like the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Insignia. ‘Building on the popularity of the Qashqai in its segment, the idea is to repeat its success in the D-segment,’ says a source.

Another competitor will be the highly-successful Ford S-Max, which the new model will tackle with a seven-seat configuration. A five-seat version may also be engineered.

Details of the engines have yet to be revealed, although the core engine is expected to be a 2.0-litre diesel, backed-up by smaller capacity oil-burners and some petrols.

The new X-Trail is being readied for a UK launch in autumn 2013 and prices are likely to start from £25k.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Jaguar XF Sportbrake

The new Jaguar XF Sportbrake has been revealed at the Geneva motor show. Jaguar will launch the rear-drive XF Sportbrake with volume-selling diesel engines for UK sale starting in November.

The Sportbrake is entirely new from the B-pillars back and is said to be just as torsionally stiff as the XF saloon, despite the tailgate opening. Jaguar’s distinctive and sometimes controversial black C-pillar detail has been carried over from the Jaguar XJ saloon. A new roof design and modified rear door frames and windows release an extra 48mm of headroom for rear-seat passengers. The rear seats are a new design, featuring a 60/40 split and an integral ski hatch. Levers in the load bay allow the seat backs to be dropped while accessing the luggage area through the tailgate opening.

With the seats up, boot volume is a roomy 550 litres, although its main rivals all possess more load space. The Audi A6 Avant and 5-series Touring each offer 560 litres and the Mercedes E-class estate has a 696-litre hold. With the seats down, the Sportbrake boasts 1675 litres of load space. That’s slightly bigger than both the A6 and the 5-series, which both have a 1670-litre capacity. However, the E-class still tops the class for all-out load-carrying ability, with 1765 litres.

Seats down, the XF Sportbrake also scores with a 1.97m long and 1.06m wide load bay — sufficient for bags of golf clubs to be stored sideways, Jaguar claims.

The central section of the boot floor is hinged into three sections and can be used as a divider to stop smaller items of luggage from rolling around. There’s also storage space under the floor and two full-length aluminium floor rails to which nets and retaining bars can be attached. Jaguar says the load area is trimmed in the same high-specification carpet as the front of the cabin. If the detachable towbar is specified, there is a dedicated space under the boot floor in which to store it.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: Mini Clubvan Concept

The Mini Clubvan concept has been unveiled at the Geneva motor show, five years after the Mini Clubman went on sale.

The Mini Clubvan concept is an extremely straightforward Clubman derivative. The Clubman’s side windows have been replaced with polycarbonate panels and the load bay has been moderately increased in size.

It is described by BMW as a ‘compact lifestyle van for business and leisure – the first concept of its kind in the premium segment’. The elegantly sign-written exterior was created for BMW by the real Hugh Buckingham of Southport.

The Clubvan is a strict two-seater. The Clubman's rear seats and false boot floor have been removed. In their place is a continuous, deeper load bay with six load attachment points and 12V charging sockets. The rear doors are very darkly tinted. Inside, the only significant addition for the concept is a bespoke aluminium and stainless steel load bay partition to protect the driver.

Even though the Clubman is 240mm longer than the Mini hatch and its wheelbase is 80mm longer, the production version of the Mini van will not be a capacious commercial vehicle. Seats down, the Clubman has a maximum load capacity of 920 litres. Even allowing for the lower load floor, the van’s capacity is not expected to be much above 1200 litres.

Although BMW hasn’t officially said that the Mini van will go into production, it is expected to arrive in showrooms later this year. At around the same time, Mini’s Oxford factory will begin to undergo extensive retooling – the first overhaul since 2000 – in preparation for the introduction of the all-new Mini.

However, it is expected that a number of Mini models based on the current platform will carry on in production until at least 2015, including the Roadster, Coupé, Clubman and Clubvan.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Dacia Lodgy

The new Dacia Lodgy MPV has been given its official world debut at the Geneva motor show today.

Available as a five- or seven-seat MPV, the Lodgy MPV is the latest addition to the growing model range from the Renault-owned Romanian brand. The line-up already comprises the Duster crossover, Sandero and Sandero Stepway supermini and Logan saloon, seven-seat estate, van and pick-up.

Few technical details of the Dacia Lodgy MPV have been issued, apart from the fact it is 4500mm in length. The name is derived from the word ‘lodge’ and, according to Dacia, refers to the model’s ability to comfortably accommodate a family and its luggage.

Renault UK has yet to decide whether to bring right-hand-drive versions of the Lodgy MPV to these shores, but it’s possible that the model could join the Duster and all-new Sandero after their January 2013 launches.

The Duster and Sandero, which will be sold through Renault UK dealers, are expected to be offered with a 1.6-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines, and the Lodgy MPV could get the same powerplants.

To promote the Lodgy MPV, Dacia has created this 355bhp, four-wheel-drive, ice-racing version, which has been driven by Formula 1 legend Alain Prost in the Andros Trophy series.

If it does come to Britain, expect the Lodgy MPV to follow the wallet-friendly pricing scheme set by the manufacturer’s other products. It should be pitched substantially below the £17k asking price of rivals such as the Renault Scenic and Citroën C4 Picasso.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Lotus Exige S Roadster

The 145mph Lotus Exige S roadster is the fastest drop top the manufacturer has ever built. Launched at today's Geneva motor show, it is the first Exige model to be offered with a factory-fitted soft-top roof and shares the same 3.5-litre V6 engine as the new Exige S coupé.

The unit produces 345bhp at 7000rpm and 295lb ft at 4500rpm, meaning the Exige S roadster — which weighs 1100kg — is capable of 0-60mph in 3.8sec and reaches 100mph from a standing start in 8.5sec.

A six-speed manual gearbox is offered as standard, but the Exige S is available with the Norfolk-based firm’s Serial Precision Shift (SPS) paddle-operated automated manual transmission. Fuel economy for the manual gearbox variant is a claimed 28mpg, with C02 emissions of 236g/km.

As with the £52,900 hard-top Exige S, an optional race pack is available and adds track-optimised suspension settings and launch control. There are also two cabin options: one more comfort-oriented and the other more stripped down and sporty.

Lotus chief Dany Bahar says although the car is mainly targeted at the Asian market, it will also be offered in Europe, but not the US.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Morgan Plus 8

After an absence of almost a decade, the Morgan Plus 8 has reappeared as a new and fully-fledged model at the Geneva motor show.

Two versions of the new ‘classic’ Morgan are on display on Morgan’s Geneva stand: the production version, powered by BMW’s 4.8-litre normally aspirated V8, and an all-electric prototype christened ‘Plus-e’, built to gauge public reaction before a decision is made on production.

The production Plus 8 slots back into Malvern Link’s showroom range underneath Morgan’s all-aluminium ‘Aero’-series flagship cars, and above the six-cylinder Morgan Roadster. Morgan development engineer Robert Gibson told Autocar this morning “it’s a car customers have wanted us to build for ten years,” since the introduction of the Aero models.

The new Plus 8 uses the same bonded and riveted aluminium chassis as the more expensive Aero cars, rather than the galvanized steel ladder chassis of Morgan’s Roadster and Plus 4. The classic-style body, though, is lighter than the Aero’s, allowing for a lesser kerbweight – just 1100kg without fluids.

Morgan describes the new Plus 8 as its “most comfortable classic model”. It comes as standard with air conditioning, a leather upholstered cockpit, a high quality audio system and a double-lined convertible roof. The car’s V8 engine, available from the factory with as much as 390bhp, can also be teamed with an optional six-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Both manual and auto versions of the car hit 62mph in just 4.5sec; the automatic is marginally the more frugal, returning 26mpg on the combined cycle.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Chevrolet Cruze SW

The Chevrolet Cruze Station Wagon (SW) have been revealed at the Geneva motor show today.

The SW body variant follows the saloon and hatchback version. At 4678mm, the Chevrolet Cruze SW is slightly longer than the hatchback (4510mm) and saloon (4597mm) models.

Load space ranges from 500 litres up to the window line in the rear to nearly 1500 litres up to roof level with the rear seats folded down.

The new model will be available with a new 130bhp 1.7-litre VCDi diesel engine, which features stop-start technology as standard and CO2 emissions of 119g/km.

The saloon variant is currently offered with a 2.0 VCDi engine in the UK, while the hatch comes with 1.6 and 1.8 petrols and the 2.0 oil-burner.

The exterior design of the Cruze SW features a tapering single arch roofline and comes with roof rails as standard.

All three Chevrolet Cruze body shapes are getting a number of exterior and interior styling changes for 2012.

These include a remodeled front fascia, modified headlamp interiors and fog lamps, and new wheel styles on the exterior, while the interior receives refinements to the center console and a greater choice of seat finishes.

UK pricing and on-sale dates have yet to be announced.

Geneva Show 2012 Highlights: 2013 Opel/Vauxhall Mokka

Vauxhall will take on the Nissan Juke and Ford’s new Fiesta-based EcoSport when the Vauxhall Mokka soft-roader hits UK showrooms in November. It was unveiled today at the Geneva motor show.

The Mokka was first seen in Detroit last month as the Buick Encore, and is the marque's answer to the Nissan Juke and Ford's new Fiesta-based EcoSport.

The high-riding five-seater is 4280mm long and around 1645mm high. It has 1540mm front and rear tracks and a 2555mm wheelbase. A picture of the interior has also been released by Vauxhall for the first time.

Both the Mokka and Encore are based on GM’s Gamma II platform, which will also underpin the next-generation Corsa. The platform is also seen beneath the new Chevrolet Aveo.

In the UK, the Mokka will offer a choice of 117bhp naturally aspirated 1.6-litre and 142bhp turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engines, as well as a 1.7 CDTi turbodiesel that has 132bhp and 221lb ft of torque.

All three powerplants will be equipped with stop-start, and the turbo versions can be combined with either six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. An all-wheel-drive version will be available in addition to the standard front-drive model.

The Mokka has a maximum of 1372 litres of load space with the rear seats folded or 533 litres with the seats up, as well as 19 storage holes and Vauxhall’s integrated Flex-Fix bicycle carrier.

The car’s minimum ground clearance is 158mm and uses suspension designed specifically for a company crossover. Most Mokka variants will ride on 18in alloy wheels as standard. Other standard technology includes electronic stability control, traction control, hill start assist and hill descent control systems and adaptive forward lighting. Vauxhall’s front camera system will be available as an option.

Malcolm Ward, Vauxhall chief designer said: "The Mokka should make a strong statement - we're hoping to help define the segment in terms of design. It also helps that you get more freedom with design when starting with a model that doesn't exist for the brand yet."
